Postdoctoral research fellowship in "Bioinformatic's" at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Rigshospitalet

The postdoc position is financed by a grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark: ‘Non-obvious antibiotic resistance genes in therapy and diagnostics’.
The postdoc position is part of a collaboration between Department of Clinical Microbiology, Rigshospitalet, Veterinary Disease Biology and Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark.

Specific job descriptions

The position comprises topics associated with bioinformatics and development of new bioinformatics tools to search for genome patterns associated with antibiotic resistance.
Using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the model organism the genomes will be investigated for patterns of variation correlating with changes in antibiotic susceptibility. For this, identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms associated with resistance using Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) will be used. Furthermore, analysis of large genome rearrangements using de novo genome assembly and newly developed molecular methods, and investigations of population structure using a linear mixed model, will be among the project tasks.

Required qualifications
Candidates should possess a PhD degree, or equivalent, in medicine, chemical or biochemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or another relevant field, and additionally fulfill the following:
  • Exhibit strong data analysis and interpretation skills
  • Be effective at working in a team
  • Can communicate orally and in writing at an advanced level in English
Moreover, the successful candidate will be experienced in bioinformatics in addition to one or more of the following areas: microbial physiology, molecular microbiology, biomedicine and medical microbiology, systems biology and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.

We offer
We offer a highly dynamic environment developed for translational research in several directions including microbiology, biotechnology and medicine. The research is organized as teamwork with elements from basic life science and clinical microbiology. In the last 4-5 years, a unique collection of fully genome sequenced bacterial isolates from patients with persistent airway infections has constituted a central data base from which important information can support experimental research aimed at identifying steps in the development of the infections.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreements with the relevant professional associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is two years (preferably to begin September 2017).

The place of work will be Department of Clinical Microbiology, Rigshospitalet, Henrik Harpestrengs Vej 4A, Copenhagen Ø.
