PhD students to Nykøbing Falster Hospital

Three positions as PhD-students are open at Nykøbing Falster Hospital by 1 June 2018. Nykøbing Falster Hospital serves the population of Lolland, Falster and part of Southern Zealand. It is a general hospital specialized in treatment of patients with acute diseases, and it is open non-stop. The PhD-positions form part of a strategy to strengthen the hospital’s research profile. The topics and qualification profiles for the three PhD-positions are listed below.

1. BIOMARKER PROFILES AND ALL CAUSE MORTALITY

Life expectancy is low in Lolland-Falster; almost 6 years lower than in the rich suburbs north of Copenhagen. It is the purpose of the project to determine the association between a biomarker risk score and all cause mortality. The project will use data from three population-based health surveys. The Lolland-Falster study; the Næstved-study; and the Greater Copenhagen study. In all three studies blood samples and physiological measurements have been taken and analysed. This rich database will form the basis for the project.

We seek a candidate interested in internal medicine and/or clinical biochemistry. Principle supervisor for the PhD-study will be Professor Elsebeth Lynge, Nykøbing Falster Hospital and co-principle supervisor will be Professor Stig Bojesen, Herlev Hospital; both University of Copenhagen, where the candidate will be enrolled.

2. LOLLAND DOESN’T MAKE YOU SICK – BUT SICK PEOPLE MOVE TO LOLLAND

In the Health Profile 2017 (Sundhedsprofilen 2017), inhabitants of Lolland come up with high scores on psychical and mental health problems. In addressing these problems, there is a tendency to focus on individual life-habits. Although positive, this approach also has limitations. The population of Lolland is not stable, people are moving in and out, and the heavy burden of diseases might result from selective migration. It is the purpose of this project to study migration and health in Lolland-Falster from 1968-2017.

We seek a candidate interested in public health/demography and with good qualifications in analysis of large register databases. Principle supervisor will be Professor Elsebeth Lynge, Nykøbing Falster Hospital, University of Copenhagen.

3. LONG-TERM EXPOSURE TO ULTRAFINE PARTICLES AND HEALTH IN SOUTHEASTERN DENMARK

Air pollution, in terms of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), in Denmark, is next to the local sources (traffic, industry, biomass burning for heating), largely influenced by the long-range transported secondary sources from Eastern and Central Europe. This contributes to a strong regional difference in PM2.5 levels, with highest levels in Southeastern Denmark (Lolland and Falster, Southern Zealand, Southeastern Fyn) and lowest PM2.5 levels in Northern Jutland. It was estimated that 3,750 deaths annually are attributed to PM2.5. However, it remains unexplored, whether secondary PM2.5 contribution from Southern and Central Europe is associated with larger health burden in the Southeastern regions of Denmark, as compared to the rest of Denmark. The purpose of this PhD project is to study the association of long-term exposure to PM2.5 with overall mortality, cardiovascular and respiratory disease morbidity.

We seek a candidate with background in epidemiology and statistics/biostatistics, preferably with some experience within environmental epidemiology, and with good qualifications in analysis of cohort data, multiple exposures, and large administrative and register databases. Principle supervisor will be Professor Zorana Jovanovic Andersen, Nykøbing Falster Hospital, University of Copenhagen.

SALARY AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Salary according to the collective agreement. The employment is a 3 year fixed-term position. The three candidates will be employed at Nykøbing Falster Hospital, which also will be the daily workplace. All three candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the University of Copenhagen.
