PhD student position in Precision Diagnostics in Cardiology
A PhD position is available in the Unit for Inherited
Cardiac Diseases at the Heart Center, Rigshospitalet, in close collaboration
with academic partners at the University of Copenhagen.
The Unit for Inherited Cardiac Diseases was
established in 2006 by Professor, Dr.med., Chief Physician Henning Bundgaard.
The clinic performs research in and medical evaluation and diagnostic work-up
of patients and relatives of patients with likely genetic/inherited cardiac
disorders. Approximately 3,200 families are followed at the clinic and diseases
vary from familial hypercholesterolemia to electrophysiological disorders to
severe forms of cardiomyopathy.
The project
The overall aim of the project is to perform deep
phenotyping of patients with cardiomyopathies, paving the way for precision
medicine in cardiology. Deep phenotyping is carried out through translational
research utilizing advanced molecular testing on tissue-samples, advanced
cardiac imaging and investigative studies exploring the physiology of cardiac
disease.
Furthermore, the unit has a history of performing clinical
randomized trials and quality control trials utilizing data from large-scale
registries and electronic health records which the successful candidate could
become involved in.
The proposed PhD program will involve projects where
patients with certain subtypes of cardiomyopathies are included in studies
investigating:
- Molecular disease mechanisms from myocardial biopsies.
- Cardiac function through invasive and imaging studies (cardiac MRI and nuclear imaging studies).
- Disease trajectories in cardiomyopathies as assessed from integrated large-scale data-sets.
- Participation in clinical trials.
We offer
The successful candidate will be a part of a dynamic
research team consisting of senior and junior cardiologists, basic researchers,
other PhD students, medical students and data scientists. The team facilitates
and participates in clinical studies, basic research studies and studies
utilizing clinical and para-clinical data from large-scale registries.
As such, the candidate will have an opportunity to
participate in studies carried out in a range of different settings and shape/influence
particular research questions or modes of investigation in the project under
the guidance of the associated supervisors.
The applicant will take active part in research
seminars, conferences and workshops organized or attended by members of the
research group.
Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD student will be responsible for identification
and inclusion of appropriate patients in advanced molecular studies.
Furthermore, the successful applicant will be responsible for the logistics and
actively participate in invasive and imaging studies.
Qualifications
The successful candidate (MD) will have qualifications,
experience and/or strong interest within one or several of the following areas:
- Clinical experience and/or research
- Research related to healthcare data from registries and electronic patient records
- Research related to bioinformatics and systems biology at the molecular level
- Have a genuine interest in genetic/molecular mechanisms underlying disease
- Competences in statistics
- Be independent and ambitious
- Possess good interpersonal skills
- Have great organizational capabilities.
Formal requirements
The research group is highly multidisciplinary and
collaborates with many other research groups nationally and internationally.
Strong networking and team player skills are therefore preferred. As the
candidate may run several projects in parallel, strong organizational skills
and the ability to keep an overview are important.
To be accepted for the position, it is a condition
that you have a degree as – or considered to be equivalent to - a Danish
Medical Doctor and have an authorization to work as a Danish Medical Doctor.
You must also be proficient in Danish.
It is a prerequisite that the PhD candidate is
enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD program
at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and
Higher Education and the guidelines for the
PhD program at the Faculty of Health and
Medical Sciences.
Terms of salary and employment
The salary and appointment terms will be as a clinical assistant according
to the Agreement for Junior Doctors as set out in Regionernes Lønnings- og
Takstnævn. The candidate will be employed at the Heart Center, Rigshospitalet.
Supervisor/start date
The primary supervisor will be Professor, Chief physician Henning Bundgaard.
Proposed start date: 1st of March 2019 (or as soon as possible).
Application
The application must be in English and include the following
documents/attachment:
1. Motivated letter of application
2. Curriculum vitae
3. A certified/signed copy of MD certificate
4. A complete list of publications and conference presentations
The application should be submitted electronically. Please be aware that we
