About the department

Organisation

The Emergency Department of Nordsjællands Hospital is one of five emergency departments in the Capital Region. At the department we receive, assess and treat a broad spectrum of patients, serving the need of 310,000 citizens.

In 2022 Nordsjællands Hospital will move into a new hospital. Through vision and innovative approaches to care, design and service the new hospital will become a future reference work. The Emergency Department is a key part in the new hospital and integral in ensuring a safe, reliable flow in the patient journey.

Currently the Emergency Department is developing its organisational structure towards an independent department with recruitment and training of its own physician staff.

The department is led by an experienced Head Nurse and a Chief Physician with board certification in Emergency Medicine. During 2019, the department will hold 37 of its own beds for triage, initial assessment and resuscitation in physical vicinity to an observational unit under the management of the clinical specialities.

The Emergency Department will be the point of entry for all acute ill patients and have the responsibility for all care and treatment of the patients until they are either discharged, transferred to the observational unit or discharged. In this on-going process a focus area is how to improve patient flow and prevent ED-crowding. We are developing on new patterns of working, optimizing care-plan within 4 hours and introducing new technologies into point-of-care testing. The professor has a great possibility to influence on this process in developing the Emergency Department regarding international best practices in ED Health Care Management.

Research and teaching

With this position the department wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Some of the main tasks for the clinical professor will be development of new fast and reliable diagnostic strategies, optimization of clinical care of acutely ill patients, as well as preventive strategies to reduce hospitalization needs.

In 2019 the Emergency Department will be responsible for training and education of junior doctors in Emergency Medicine. The professor is expected to contribute in teaching and training of junior doctors as well as other staff members in research topics in Emergency Medicine both formal and practically. Research in acute care medicine as all other major clinical research clusters at Nordsjællands Hospital, will be integrated in the existing strong research platform the so-called  ”Forskningsklynger” and as these be supported by the Department of Research at Nordsjællands Hospital.

Important research focus areas could include but are not limited to sepsis management in the ED, point-of-care-ultrasound, ED crowding, pre-hospital care and trans-sectional care.

The research environment in the Emergency Department currently consists of one nurse with a PhD degree in a post doc position and a PhD student with a degree in nursing. The current research topics are patient reported outcome (PRO), palliative care and quality of life, nurses' clinical decision-making as well as contribution to the large project (I-EWS) involving all hospitals in Zealand.
