Consultancy at The Emergency Department (Akutmodtagelsen), Amager and Hvidovre Hospital combined with a Clinical Professorship in Emergency Medicine

A clinical position as consultant in a clinical relevant specialty at Emergency Department at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital is open for appointment as soon as possible. The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as Clinical Professor in Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position, the Emergency Department, Amager and Hvidovre Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in acute medicine in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen. It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Organisation
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

Emergency Medicine is a new medical speciality in Denmark and we wish that applicants have a strong commitment to this new speciality in order to give academic and clinical development in the field. Therefore, applicants must be board certified in the speciality Emergency Medicine or have intensions to achieve this board certification within at reasonable time frame.

The professorship is funded by a grant from TrygFonden.

Hvidovre Hospital (HVH) is one of The Capital Region of Denmark’s 4 new emergency hospitals. Our uptake area covers approximately 520,000 capita which is the largest in the country. In order to accommodate the planning area now and in the future to come; Hvidovre including Amager and Glostrup Hospital are in the middle of an organizational transformation toward “New Amager and Hvidovre Hospital” (NAHH).

The combined appointment is an excellent opportunity for the right person with the drive to transform the way we act, identify, treat and secure triage and patient pathways in the Emergency Department, in collaboration with the rest of the Hospital and the Healthcare system. The introduction of a brand-new wing at our hospital in late 2020 will be an organizational challenge and at the same time a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a long-awaited impact on our highly specialized hospital system alongside the implementation of a new specialty within acute medicine.

The Emergency Department at HVH has a vital and central role in NAHH. It will become the entrance point of almost all acute patients admitted to HVH. This calls for a new organization and an even closer collaboration with all departments at the hospital. Our strategy is aligned with the recommendations of the Danish Health Authorities stating that all patients should start relevant treatment within a maximum of 30 minutes and should have a tentative treatment plan drawn up by or approved by a consultant within 4 hours of arrival. It is a corner stone in our strategy to employ our own consultants which are part of the team of physicians on call 24/7/365. Our approach will set new standards for treatment, research and training and education to secure the highest possible quality of treatment and care.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
Presently we are 12 consultants of which 6 will be board certified in emergency medicine by next year and 2 specialty registrars employed at the emergency department. We have an extensive training program with currently 4 physicians in introduction positions to acute medicine and will have further 2 physicians in specialty training-positions for acute medicine starting in December 2019. We participate in a national network with other emergency departments to develop a series of master classes for our consultants and specialty registrars.

Research has a high priority in our department. We employ a part time professor in Infectious Disease with special focus on biomarkers in acute medicine together with Clinical Research Centre at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital. The collaboration has resulted in a multiprofessional, cross-sectoral research environment with a solid and embedded infrastructure for clinical research with acute patients. The vision is to reinforce quality of treatment and care for the acute and often multimorbid patients with a history of polypharmacy. In addition, we have one post.doc nurse and one consultant with a part time research position. Our young physicians are offered time for research and an opportunity to start a PhD. Altogether we present a strong research platform with programs on patient involvement, multidisciplinary interventions, implementation science and others to support the activities of a new consultant and clinical professor in acute medicine.
