Consultancy at Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, C, Centre for Cancer and Organ Dysfunction (CKO), Rigshospitalet combined with a clinical professorship in Surgery with special focus on Innovative, Safe and Targeted Cancer Surgery in Upper Gastroin

A clinical position as consultant of surgery at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Rigshospitalet is open for appointment as soon as possible.  
 
The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Surgery with special focus on Innovative, Safe and Targeted Cancer Surgery in Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.  
 
With this new position the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Rigshospitalet wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.  
 
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT  
 
Organisation  
 
Department of Surgical Gastroenterology is based at the Centre for Cancer and Organ Dysfunction (CKO).  
 
Besides the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology CKO includes the following 8 departments: Department of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Haematology, Department of Oncology, Department of Urology, Department of Nephrology, Department of Endocrinology and Department of Intensive Therapy, Anaesthesia and Surgery.  
 
In collaboration with the Juliane Marie Centre we handle the basic paediatric surgery for The Capital Region and highly specialized treatments in several areas for (East)-Denmark.  
 
Clinical functions and focus areas of the department  
 
The Department has essential functions regarding treatment of abdominal traumas at the Trauma Centre of Rigshospitalet (ACS certified level 1 Trauma Center) and a tertiary referral for patients with severe abdominal diseases from East Denmark.  
 
Furthermore, the Department has a large endoscopic function and are in all areas expected to be a driving force for the professional development in the country.  
 
The department has a significant research obligation and has an extensive obligation regarding teaching both pre- and post-graduate.  
 
The Department is highly specialized. Yearly, approximately 115 surgical procedures for cancers in the esophageal transition zone are performed as well as 100 procedures for gastric cancer of which about 20% are done laparoscopically. In addition, advanced endoscopy is performed, which in addition to approximately 3500 predominantly advanced therapeutic procedures include upper gastrointestinal tract, EMR and HALO of Barret's esophagus, approximately 100-200 procedures  
 
The clinic uses robotic surgery as part of the treatment of cancer of the esophagus, transition zone and stomach, where release of the ventricle into the abdominal cavity is routine, while the method is being implemented in the thorax.  
 
In addition to this, the Department performs approximately 450 liver resections, approximately 180 pancreatic resections and 60 liver transplants. Furthermore, we perform complicated surgery in connection with iatrogenic biliary lesions and close to 20-30 Klatskins-operations. Finally, surgery for complications, trauma and lower abdominal disease is performed for various disorders for approximately 200 patients annually.  
 
The applicant must also participate in developing robotic assisted surgery for the liver and pancreas, thus aspects of Hepato-, Pancreato- and Biliary Surgery are incorporated both clinically and scientifically.  
 
 
Research and teaching  
 
With the new position as consultant in Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and clinical professor in Surgery with special focus on Innovative, Safe and Targeted Cancer Surgery in upper Gastrointestinal Cancer the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.  
 
Qualifications  
 
The applicant must be a board-certified specialist in surgery. In the assessment of the applicant emphasis will be placed on research experience primarily within cancer in addition to broad clinical experience. Applicants with experience in robotic assisted surgery of upper gastrointestinal disorders and advanced endoscopy will be preferred. The clinical part of the main responsibility area will be within Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, but the person concerned will contribute to all aspects of the clinical examination and treatment of patients, who are otherwise referred to the clinic, together with the clinic's other specialists.  
 
The consultant refers to the head of the clinic and, in cooperation with him has responsibility for the fulfillment of the clinic's goal within oncological surgery and its development.  
 
Emphasis is placed on the applicant having a distinctive professional profile with relevant continuous medical education and knowledge of the clinic's functions  
 
We expect great research experience as well as experience with and interest in developing new treatment modalities and teaching. Of personal qualities, emphasis will be placed on the ability to inspire and teach, as well as to enter a dialogue on the development of the minimally invasive surgery within a wide range of the clinic's highly specialized treatment options

Conditions  
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Rigshospitalet.  
 
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.  
 
As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Surgical Gastroenterology. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the department of Surgical Gastroenterology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Rigshospitalet.
