It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the clinical research associate professorship and the clinical position.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Organisation:

The Region of Zealand has a population of approximately 820.000 citizens who are under the care of four hospital units. Zealand University Hospital is one of these units and is constituted by a division in Roskilde and a division in Koege. Zealand University Hospital has at present approximately 700 beds and cover most medical specialties. The division at Roskilde primarily treats specialist diseases whereas the division in Koege also treats more general conditions and emergencies. In 2024 Zealand University Hospital becomes the main regional hospital with a centralization of nearly all medical specialties and a total of 835 beds. In the meantime, the division in Roskilde will prepare for the merger by increasing expertise and developing specialized functions using state of the art technology. It is the ambition that research will become an integral part of the organization’s everyday functions.

The Department of Internal Medicine at Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde, comprises three different specialties; infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine and nephrology. Each specialty has a status as regional center of expertise and carries out specialized investigations and treatments. The department has at present two separate wards and 40 hospital beds but are planning to open a third ward dedicated to infectious medicine at the end of 2019. The department has approximately 3000 admissions and 50.000 outpatient consultations are carried out each year. The department has 250 employees and a budget of 170 million Danish kroners per year.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department:

The section of infectious disease employs four experienced senior consultants.

The ward has 21 beds and approximately 1500 admissions per year. It is shared between the sections of infectious disease and pulmonology. The patients are admitted from the emergency department and the outpatient clinic or are transferred from other departments/hospitals. Most patients suffer from complicated disease within the entire spectrum of infectious disease, e.g. spondylodiscitis, tuberculosis, HIV and severe septicemia.

The outpatient clinic covers all aspects of infectious disease except for the treatment of highly specialized disease entities. We annually perform 3000 outpatient consultations.

In Denmark, hospital services are defined at three levels. Main functions are available at all or most hospitals. Regional functions are available at one or more hospitals in the region while highly specialized functions are only available at 1-3 hospitals in the country.

At present, the department at Roskilde provide main and regional functions. It is the ambition to provide highly specialized functions once Zealand University Hospital becomes the main regional hospital in 2024.

Both the ward and the outpatient clinic have the latest equipment.

Research and teaching:

With the new position as consultant or staff specialist of infectious disease and clinical research associate professor of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Internal Medicine, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

At present, the department has two associate professors in nephrology, two in pulmonology (one shared with the Department of Internal Medicine in Naestved/Slagelse Sygehuse) and two PhD students in nephrology and pulmonology.
