Consultancy in Plastic surgery combined with a clinical professorship in Plastic Surgery

A clinical position as consultant of Plastic surgery at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a position as chair professor of Plastic Surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Plastic and reconstructive surgery is located at Herlev Hospital.

There are 18 beds in the ward and we are currently 12 consultants out of 25 doctors in total. The department has its own separate surgical ward and polyclinic. The department has highly specialized function within microsurgical reconstruction. Furthermore, the department has regional function within massive weight loss

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The department treats a growing number of cancer patients (melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer), patients with certain benign tumours, and has regional function for treating patients with excess skin after massive weight loss. Other corrective procedures are performed in patients who qualify for this within the public funded health care.  A large part of the department’s activity is breast reconstructions of all kinds, including oncoplastic surgery in collaboration with the breast surgery department. In addition to breast reconstruction with DIEP flap and flap reconstruction of orthopaedic patients with osteomyelitis, the microsurgical team has specialized in lymphovenous anastomosis as treatment of lymphedema as the only place in Denmark.  

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in Plastic Surgery and clinical professor of Plastic Surgery, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. The main research areas in the department are melanoma and other skin cancers, massive weight loss, and breast reconstructions.

Five PhD students are associated with the department, and the department educates medical students.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Plastic surgery. Furthermore, the applicant must have a well-documented clinical and research profile in oncologic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Finally the applicant must have significant teaching experience at all levels and an academic degree, minimum at the level of a PhD.

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As chair professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Plastic and reconstructive surgery. The chair professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.
