ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Organisation

The Department of Orthopaedics at Bispebjerg Hospital consists of two acute bed-wards and a combined bed-ward for elective and same-day surgery, plus nine orthopaedic operating rooms and three out-patient clinics. We are 300 employees, including 85 MD’s, and we perform more than 33.000 out-patient visits and 6.000 operations annually. The department's work is characterized by an inventive atmosphere, mutual trust, cooperation and proud professionalism.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Clinically, the Department of Orthopaedics at Bispebjerg Hospital covers regional functions within the subspecialities of traumatology, ortho-geriatrics, hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasties, infections, hand, foot/ankle surgery, and high-specialized sports surgery and sports medicine.

The department highly believes in co-working with other departments and experts, providing several high-profile results such as e.g. patients with proximal femoral fractures and orthogeriatrics in general in a co-work with the ER, Endocrinology, Geriatric and Anesthetic departments and amputees in a co-work with the Copenhagen Diabetic Foot Center consisting of colleagues from the Wound Center, Endocrinology and Vascular Surgery departments. Also, we have achieved the position of Waiting-Warranty-Center for hip and knee arthroplasties with now more than 1.000 arthroplasties annually. Not least we cover the high-specialized sports surgery and sports medicine, world known for IOC center status and world’s leading research environment within sports science in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments.

The ambition for the clinical part of the professorship is to support and stimulate the clinical work in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology to improve the patient pathways and treatment quality across professions and sectors. The focus is patients with degenerative joint diseases and related areas, and traumatology, especially in the fracture area including patients with proximal femoral fractures.

Research and teaching

The department is active in research with 3 affiliated professorships and a varying number of PhD positions. The department published approx. 50 articles in 2018, however primarily within sports surgery and sports medicine.

With this new position as consultant in orthopaedic surgery combined with a clinical professorship in orthopaedic surgery with special focus on treatment of degenerative joint diseases and traumatology, the Department of Orthopaedics at Bispebjerg Hospital wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

The ambition for this professorship is to support and stimulate research in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology in general and especially in the area of treatment of degenerative joint diseases and related areas. There are several patient groups with a huge unreleased research potential, such as e.g. the above mentioned hip and knee arthroplasties and orthogeriatrics, in which there are already well-established multidisciplinary clinical working groups. The department’s patient volume is large and well suited for clinical studies based on our own hospital patient cohorts, but also for participating in or initiating/conducting regional, national and/or international multicentre studies.
