Consultancy in Plastic Surgery combined with a clinical professorship (chair) in Plastic Surgery

A clinical position as Chief Consultant of research of Plastic Surgery at the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit at Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 10-year position as clinical professor (chair) of Plastic Surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns Unit, Rigshospitalet, is located in the heart of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The department covers almost all aspects of the field of plastic surgery.
The Department has national function for Cleft Lip- Gum- and Palate Plastic Surgery, Major Burns, Transgender Surgery and Facial Paralysis.
The Department is divided into the following expert functions:

  • Oncological Plastic Surgery
  • Trauma- and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
  • Cleft Lip- Gum- and Palate Plastic Surgery
  • Major Burns

With this position as chief consultant in Plastic Surgery and clinical professor (chair) of Plastic Surgery, the Department of Plastic surgery and Burns Unit wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. The main research areas in the department are breast reconstruction, skin cancer and treatment of burns and scars with cell therapy.

Three associate professors, two post docs and five PhD students are currently associated with the department. The department educates medical students from the University of Copenhagen and doctors in residency in plastic surgery and hosts national fellows in microsurgery.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The department treats patients with all types of diseases in which plastic reconstructive surgery is needed. The Department also holds a national function in cleft Lip- Gum- and Palate surgery, transgender surgery and in the treatment of large burns. The department also holds a specialized function in microsurgery, treatment of pressure ulcers in patients with spinal cord injuries and in the treatment of patients with vascular malformations.

Research and teaching

The applicant is expected to be a visionary research leader and ambitious academic teacher. The role of the applicant will be to initiate and facilitate research of the highest international standard. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to initiate national and international collaborations, raise funding for research, conduct clinical trials, conduct register-based research, and translate the results into evidence-based treatments in all fields of plastic surgery.

Qualifications

The applicant must be a board-certified specialist in Plastic Surgery. The applicant must have well-documented research and clinical experience with reconstructive plastic surgery. The applicant must have experience in conducting multicenter clinical trials. The applicant must also have documented experience with leadership in research such as a research-group leader or as head of a medical/scientific society. The applicant must have experience in research fundraising including experience in assessment of fund proposals. The applicant is expected to hold experience in disseminating research findings into the general public and media.

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to any applicants who may already be employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the Head of the Department of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet.
