Consultant at Department of Pathology
A position
as consultant/staff specialist is vacant at the Department of Pathology, Odense
University Hospital. We are looking for a fully qualified surgical/anatomical
pathologist with special interests within one of these areas:
- Haematopathology
and lymph node pathology
- Gynaecopathology
including perinatal pathology but excluding cervical cancer screening
- Dermatopathology
- Lower Gastrointestinal pathology (mainly colo-rectal
pathology)
- Nephro-urological pathology
Odense University Hospital (OUH) is a large teaching
hospital (about 1000 beds) with all medical specialities represented in one
place. OUH is the main hospital in the Region of Southern Denmark, and we have
a close collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark. Please visit our

The department of Pathology The department http://en.ouh.dk/department/pathology/ is
one of four departments of pathology within Region of Southern Denmark. In
total the department has a little more than 140 employees, comprising physicians,
molecular biologists, laboratory technicians, medical secretaries and autopsy
assistants. Currently the medical staff is comprised of 1 head of dept and
professor., 2 professors, 16 consultants, 7 staff specialists and 9 junior
doctors who work together within the following specialist groups:
-Upper Gastrointestinal pathology
-Lower Gastrointestinal pathology
-Gynaecological and perinatal pathology
-Nephro-urological and cardiovascular pathology
-Respiratory tract and head-and-neck-pathology
-Breast pathology
-Dermatopatology
-Haematological and lymph node pathology
-Neuromuscular and soft tissue pathology
The department operates interdisciplinary laboratories in
the areas of oncological cytology, flow cytometry, molecular pathology and
electron microscopy. In Denmark, hospital services are defined at three levels.
Main functions will be available at all or most hospitals. Regional functions
will be available at one or more hospitals in the region while highly
specialized functions are typically available at 1-3 hospitals only.
Main functions: The department provides pathology service
for Odense University Hospital as well as for general practitioners, practicing
specialists and dentists on the island of Funen, i.e. up to 0.5 million
citizens.
Regional functions: The department provides regional
functions within the following areas for citizens in Region of Southern
Denmark plus part of Region Zealand, i.e. up to 1.5 million citizens:
-Nephropathology
-Haematopathology
-Interstitiel pulmonary diseases
-Hepatological diseases
-Inflammatory and degenerative muscular diseases
-Perinatal autopsy pathology
Highly specialized functions: The department provides highly
specialized functions within the following areas for citizens in Region of
Southern Denmark, i.e. up to 1.2 million citizens.
-Metabolic bone diseases
-Medical heart diseases
-Malignant childhood tumours
-Complex oral tumors
-Cerebral neoplasias, degenerative/metabolic diseases and
malformations
Teaching: The department teaches medical students and
science students at University of Southern Denmark as well as students in
bioanalysis. Formal teaching is provided by the 3 professors and 7 associate
professors, however, all staffs participate in education of students.
Research: During recent years, the Research Unit of
Pathology has expanded significantly. The Research Unit turns out approximately
85 peer-review papers annually. The Research Unit comprises a professor in
Pathology), a professor in neuroscience, a professor of neurooncopathology
(also head of research), a professor of molecular haematology (together with
Depart. of Haematology), an associate professor in pancreatic cancer pathology,
a research secretary, 6 PhD-students and a number of Master’s students. The
department aims to expand research and development further and specifically to
cover all highly specialized treatments offered within pathology.
Job responsibilities:
The consultant’s obligations will primarily be to:
•Participate in routine Diagnostics
•Supervise junior doctors
•Ensure coordination and collaboration regarding grossing,
microscopy, autopsies, clinical conferences, etc.
•Prepare and revise clinical instructions
•Participate in appropriate developmental and quality
assurance work
•Participate in appropriate cancer working groups (Multi
Disciplinary Teams)
•Participate in the development of new initiatives in the
department, including early warning, medical technology assessment, equipment
applications, etc.
•Contribute to optimization of documentation and registration
•Contribute to continued development of cooperation with
clinical departments and primary care.
•Applicants are expected to contribute to research
activities
