Consultancy at Department of Cardio-Thoracic surgery RT combined with a clinical professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery

A permanent clinical position as consultant of General Thoracic Surgery or Cardiac Surgery at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a permanent position as clinical professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
With this new position the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Rigshospitalet wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet is the largest highly specialized unit for surgical treatment of the entire spectrum of diseases in the chest of both adult and paediatric patients in Denmark. The Department offers clinical and advanced residency programs for general thoracic surgery as well as cardiac surgery. The large number and complexity of patients at the Department provide an ideal learning environment for specialized cardiothoracic care.
The Department is national center for congenital heart disease as well as intervention in Grown Up Congenital Heart Disease (GUCH), lung-transplantation, surgery for Mesothelioma, surgery for advanced stage Thymoma and lung-volume-reduction surgery in COPD.

The department performs

  • 1500 adult cardiac procedures
  • 1200 adult thoracic procedures
  • 240 congenital- cardiac procedures
  • 1500 endoscopies in general thoracic diseases
  • Approx. 3,100 outpatient consultations

Focus areas of the department

  • Minimally invasive thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery
  • Trimodal (chemo - and radiation therapy and surgery) treatment of lung cancer
  • Simulation training in thoracoscopic surgery
  • Minimal invasive lung volume reduction surgery
  • Surgical treatment of mesothelioma
  • Minimal invasive Aortic and Mitral-valve surgery
  • The use of arterial and venous graft material in a minimal invasive setting.
  • Transcatheter versus surgical aortic valve implantation
  • Coagulative disturbances and treatment following cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Cerebral, pulmonal, and renal protection during and following cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Circulatory support (ECMO)
  • Transplantation (Heart and Lung) and related circulatory support methods.
  • Congenital cardiac surgery

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in General Thoracic Surgery or Cardiac Surgery and clinical professor of Thoracic Surgery the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Qualifications

The applicant must hold a specialist certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery approved by the Danish Health and Medicines Authority or an equivalent certification by a Nordic or EU country which can be approved by the Danish Health and Medicines Authority.

The applicant must document scientific interest and activity within Cardiothoracic Surgery. The applicant must have documented clinical experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and experience in relevant surgical  procedures, teaching, research and development within the research area.

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Rigshospitalet.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Cardiothoracic Surgery to whom the consultancy refers. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full time secretary position from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Rigshospitalet.
