ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Clinical functions and
focus areas of the department
The Pathology Department of Rigshospitalet is
Denmark’s largest pathology department for expert diagnostics within all areas
of surgical pathology. As surgical pathology anno 2019 is a multidisciplinary
discipline, it requires doctors, lab-technicians, molecular biologists,
secretaries and anatomical pathology technicians to work together to serve our
patients. We are in all 180 employees, of which 37 are consultants, and receive
95,000 requests yearly.
In the coming years, the Department of Pathology will intensify its focus on the balance between efficiency in diagnostics on the one hand and resources allocated to research and development on the other side.
Biobank and
Databank
Denmark collects more data on its citizens that any other country.
Administrative registers in Denmark are all indexed with a unique person
identifier, the so-called CPR number. As the official Danish statistics bureau,
Statistics Denmark recycles a large number of these ‘administrative footprints’
to produce extremely comprehensive statistics.
The Patobank (www.patobank.dk) is Denmark’s nationwide digital databank since 1987 on pathology. The Patobank is continuously updated with data from all pathological analyses conducted by all the country's 13 pathology departments. This also includes pathology results from the screening programs for cervical, breast and colon cancer. The Patobank feeds directly into the National Health Registry of Pathology
(www.sundhedsdatastyrelsen.dk/da/registre-og-services/om-de-nationale-sundhedsregistre/doedsaarsager-og-biologisk-materiale/patologiregisteret)
The Patobank is used as a daily tool for diagnostics, a data source for cancer registries and quality assurance programs and finally as a source for research projects. The data contain the patients name, unique person identifier, incl. birth date, the diagnosis, both as a descriptive report and with relevant SNOMED codes referring to the organ and the diagnosis and the pathology department where the samples is archived.
Parallel to the local archives with paraffin embedded blocks, is The Danish Cancer Biobank (www.cancerbiobank.dk), a national biobank since 2010, containing fresh and frozen tissue and blood samples from patients diagnosed with certain cancer types. The samples in the biobank are verified to contain malignancy and are always, if possible, accompanied by a sample of non-malignant tissue of the same organ. All samples are checked to be representative and are reported and linked to the diagnostic counterpart of the tissue in the Patobank and the local paraffin archive.
Digitalization
There is a broad consensus in the pathology community, that
digitization of images is part of the future of pathology, and several
initiatives have already been undertaken at the dept. of pathology of
Rigshospitalet and as a result, the equipment for scanning is purchased, just
as the server capacity for archiving these images. Currently, there are good
opportunities for scanning, digitalizing and archiving images for research
goals and several research projects focusing on automatic image analysis and
software development are been worked on. The department expects ‘to go digital’
no later than 2021 after which all the departments 0.8 million diagnostic
images yearly will be diagnosed and archived digitally.
Research and teaching
The Pathology department participates in several national and
international research and development projects with the main objective to
identify and investigate new diagnostic, prognostic, predictive and therapeutic
conditions which affect patient care and treatment. With the new position as
consultant in pathological anatomy and cytology and clinical professor of pathological
anatomy and cytology, the Department of Pathology wishes to strengthen the
department’s current clinical research activities and to promote inspiring pre-
and postgraduate education in pathological anatomy and cytology. Please find
