Become an emergency doctor in Denmark
Interested in a Scandinavian lifestyle? The Emergency Department @Holbaek Hospital, Denmark is looking for EU/UK certified specialists in Emergency Medicine for 2022. Excellent work-life balance in a highly livable town just one hour drive from Copenhagen.
Candidates with an interest in EM research are especially sought for (a position as part-time researcher within the department is open) but candidates with a more clinically/teaching oriented profile can also apply.
We offer:
- A good collegial atmosphere
- A good professional environment
- Opportunities to develop the emergency medicine specialty
- Assistance with relocation and intensive Danish lessons etc
Why apply to work at the Holbaek Emergency Department?
Our ambition is to be at the cutting edge of emergency medicine in Denmark. With us, you get the opportunity to work as an emergency doctor at a high technical level and be responsible for patient treatment.
The emergency department is an independent department with around 80 nurses, 36 doctors and 14 secretaries on staff. We work in teams on a day-to-day basis and have a reputation for having a really good collegial work environment, and we look forward to welcoming you.
Short patient pathways
The department structure is based on the model of some American emergency departments, in which patients have a short, concentrated stay, with rapid diagnostic clarification. On average, patients in the emergency department who require inpatient care are transferred to admissions less than four hours after arrival. In those four hours we must make a diagnosis and start treatment. The department is responsible for the treatment of around 95% of the acute patients who come to the hospital.
We also have an inpatient ward, the Acute Diagnostic Unit. This is our “House section”, where we primarily treat internal medicine patients, e.g. patients who require more complex investigation.
The emergency department’s doctors receive ambulance patients and are team leaders for the cardiac arrest team. We are in the process of having a CT scanner installed in the emergency room itself. Emergency admission of the sickest patients will take place according to a “Direct-to-CT Protocol”, along the same principles as in some Level 1 trauma centres.
In addition, the department is a major training institution, with the department’s doctors acting as instructors and course organisers for emergency medicine courses for doctors, primarily from Region Zealand and the Capital Region of Denmark. Depending on your experience and interests, it will be a natural step for you to teach alongside the rest of us.
Your life is more than your job
It must be possible for your life to be about more than your job. We are therefore open to requests for part-time working, for example, or for your work to be concentrated in a few weeks each month to give you more days off in a row. Let’s talk about it.
We’re looking for someone who:
• Is a specialist with emergency experience – preferably in emergency medicine, although other specialties may also be relevant
• Likes the unpredictable nature of emergency work
• Thrives on working in teams
• Likes teaching younger colleagues
• Has the courage to try life as a doctor in Denmark
• Is willing to learn Danish
• Is an EU citizen and EU-trained doctor and specialist with a view to obtaining a Danish licence to practise and Danish recognition of specialist training.
If you have special areas of interest, it will be a natural step for you to take on special responsibilities: teaching, research, simulation training, ultrasound … you name it. You will be involved in driving development in the future, and your views and initiative are crucial.
Salary and employment conditions
You will be employed as a unit specialist or consultant, depending on your experience and the Danish collective agreement.
The position includes duty shifts, and you are expected to be able to serve as senior on-call doctor after an individual induction process and completion of a longer Danish language course. Senior on-call doctors are currently on site until 11 pm on weekdays and then on standby from their homes. You will see COVID patients, too, so you need to be prepared for that aspect as well.
The start date in our department is 1 January – but your job must fit into your whole life, so let us know if another date would suit you even better.
You will receive assistance in learning Danish and in relocating to Denmark. We help you learn Danish and acquire knowledge about the Danish labour market and work culture through an intensive training course with our inhouse language teacher combined with a course at a Danish language school. You must be willing to put in a lot of work to learn Danish both inside and outside working hours, as this is a prerequisite for holding the position.
You will also receive professional relocation assistance to find a dwelling, tax advice and help with the necessary registration in Denmark as well as with having any children enrolled in a school or kindergarten. We also offer a job search process for your spouse. In addition, we offer some financial contribution to your relocation costs.
Further information about the position can be obtained by contacting lead clinician Peter Hallas at phaa@regionsjaelland.dk
We reserve the option to evaluate applicants on an ongoing basis – so, if you are interested, please don’t wait to apply.
