ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

We are a department that in addition to treating adult patients with various types of nephrology diseases, has a long tradition of research and pre- and post graduate education.

We are around 170 employees including 12 senior doctors and 9 doctors at training.  The department is divided into 4 different sections: A bedward with 20 beds, and ambulatory functions for 2500 outpatients, 90 patients treated with peritoneal dialysis and 250 patients treated with hemodialysis. Clinically and research-wise we emphasize the importance of collaborating with others both within our own area, interdisciplinary, nationally and internationally.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The department takes care of patients with acute or chronic kidney failure, electrolyte disturbances and severe hypertension. All levels of immunotherapy including plasmapheresis are performed. The department is one of the country’s largest dialysis departments having an ongoing focus on home treatment.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in nephrology and clinical professor of Internal Medicine: Nephrology the Department of nephrology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Ad research: Ever since its establishment 40 years ago the department has published a great number of articles and Ph.D. thesis covering different subjects within nephrology. During the last 10 years the main topic for basic and clinical research has been the association between chronic kidney disease and mineral bone disease. National and international collaborations within this field has been established and the department is steadily strengthening the clinical and translational research within this area, but we still consider research to be dynamic, and we have ongoing new projects in different areas.  Recently we have strengthened our collaboration with Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen including a part time senior doctor working clinically and research-wise in both departments and collaborative research projects in the field of diabetic nephropathy. We have an inspiring research environment with several part-time or full-time young and senior researchers, including 4 Ph.D. students and one post doc fellow.  So far in 2021 , the department published 12 scientific articles.

Ad teaching: We value teaching very highly and perform teaching at all levels. We have a goal of persistence to be very well evaluated by all students.
