Consultancy in Intensive Care combined with a clinical research associate professorship in Anaesthesiology

 

A clinical position as research responsible consultant of Intensive Care at the Department of Anaesthesiology at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

 

The position as consultant is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical research associate professor in Anaesthesiology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

 

With this new position the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching within treatment of the critically ill patient.

 

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the clinical research associate professorship and the clinical position.

 

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Region of Zealand has a population of approximately 830.000 citizens, who are under the care of four hospital units. Zealand University Hospital constitutes one of these units and the hospital, Køge and Roskilde, has approximately 550 beds and cover most medical and surgical specialties. In 2026, the University Hospital in Køge will be opening a brand-new super hospital.

Zealand University Hospital has an extensive educational activity, and currently heads the candidate part of the medical education in the Zealand Region. In the future, a full medical degree education will be located in the Zealand Region. It will be a major task for the current position to participate in this and head the teaching of medical students in treatment of the critically ill patient within the anaesthesiological speciality.

 

 

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department:

 

Zealand University Hospital Køge is a level 2 trauma center and admits acute patients around the clock.

The Department of Anaesthesiology specializes in airway management, postoperative pain treatment and ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. The Intensive Care Unit has a special interest in sedation, delirium, rehabilitation and late complications following ICU treatment.

 

All together ZUH, Køge and the Roskilde branch, has two Intensive Care Units (17 beds) with Level 2 treatment of medical and surgical patients including dialysis, as well as 30 operating theatres, which cater for several major types of surgery. These include faciomaxilliary surgery, oral surgery, ENT/head and neck surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, plastic- and breast surgery, urology, vascular surgery and ophthalmology. Finally, a clinic for non-malignant pain with multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain is a strong focus.

 

The department is committed to highest level of quality of care with a strong focus on research, and teaching.

 

The Department of Anaesthesiology has a research unit, Centre for Anaesthesiological Research, headed by a Chair professor and currently includes >15 of Ph.D. - and Scholar students. The main research focus areas include postoperative pain, chronic pain, regional anesthesia, treatment of delirium, rehabilitation after ICU treatment, and perioperative medicine.

 

Research and teaching:

With the new position as consultant of Intensive Care and clinical research associate professor of Anaesthesiology, the Department of Anaesthesiology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

 

In collaboration with the head of the ICU and the head of the clinical research unit (professor) at the department, the applicant will be responsible for leading the research at the ICU, develop and implement a visionary research strategy that facilitates evidence-based treatment of ICU patients.

 

Qualifications:

For the position as consultant:

  • Clinical high level interest and experience with ICU treatment
  • Clinical and research interest in clinically ICU related themes such as pain treatment, sedation, cognitive function, treatment of delirium, sleep and late complications following critically illness.
  • Clinical and research interest in personalized medicine
  • Clinical and research interest within patient experience from critical illness
  • Experience from implementation of clinical pathways in anaesthesia and critical care

 

Applicants for a position as consultant or as staff specialist must be board-certified specialists in Anaesthesiology.

 

Conditions:

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the clinical research associate professorship) and to the hospital (the clinical position) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the clinical research associate professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants or staff specialists at Zealand University Hospital.

 

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

 

As clinical research associate professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital.
