Consultancy combined with a clinical professorship in Psychiatry with special focus on Early Detection of Psychosis
A clinical position as senior consultant with a special focus on early detection of psychosis at the Department of Psychiatry East, Roskilde at the Mental Health Service in Region Zealand is open for appointment from 1st April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position as consultant is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor in Psychiatry at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
With this combined position, the Mental Health Services in Region Zealand wishes to continue and accelerate the leadership in clinical research and teaching within the field of early detection of psychosis and psychopathology in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the clinical professorship and the clinical position.
About the department: Psychiatry East
The Department of Psychiatry East in Roskilde is led by a chief psychiatrist and a chief nurse. The general adult psychiatric department is the publicly funded tertiary mental health service for the citizens in the Eastern part of Region Zealand, i.e. the urban areas of Roskilde and Køge. The department has four bed units with a total of 69 beds, and an emergency unit with 12 beds, and several outpatient clinics, community mental health services, outreach services, and specialized treatment units. It has comprehensive pre- and post-graduate teaching obligations concerning medical students, doctors, and other health professionals. The staff also has teaching and research obligations at the University of Copenhagen. The department is organized with a team management for each ward and outpatient department, comprising a lead nurse and a consultant. Importantly, Psychiatry East in Roskilde encompasses the regional Knowledge and Research Centre for Early Psychosis and the regional Clinic for Early Detection of Psychosis [Tidlig opsporing af Psykose – TOP] which is a self-referring unit for people 15-65 years old and information center for their next-of-kin and larger network.
Clinical functions
As senior consultant with a special focus on early detection of psychosis, the clinical work encompass duties at the Knowledge and Research Centre for Early Psychosis as well as duties with regional educational perspectives within the whole Region Zealand Mental Health Service. Details of the clinical duties will be negotiated with the chief psychiatrist in accordance with the research interests and expertise of the candidate.
Research and teaching
Research Unit Psychiatry East was recently established, but builds on previous research and it encompass currently one clinical professor of psychiatry (retiring), four cross-disciplinary senior researchers and six PhD-students. The research group has their own small building close to the management and the bed units in Roskilde. The professor secretary is shared with the professor of Child & Adolescence Psychiatry , which as a separate department is located within three minutes walking distance. Research Unit Psychiatry East has for several years had early detection of psychosis as an important research area in collaboration with the University of Oslo. This research spurred the establishment of the Early Detection of Psychosis Clinic.
The professorship must ensure the continued expansion of clinical assessment and intervention research, including psychosis research and advanced psychopathological mapping for the organization of individualized treatment.
Psychiatric research in Region Zealand is organized in a Psychiatric Research Unit and local Research Units at most Departments. Research collaboration across departments is extensive, the researchers being united in fast growing research networks around three main themes: “Body & Mind”; Psychotherapy & Psychopathology” and “Implementation and User Participation”. In total, Psychiatry Region Zealand employs more than 20 Phd-students, three post-docs, several senior researchers/associate professors, five professors at Copenhagen University and two professors at University of Southern Denmark. Cross-disciplinary collaboration is prioritized, and researchers have diverse training: medicine, psychology, nursing, health economics, public health etc. It is expected that the successful candidate will expand the research group in Psychiatry East based on external funding and participate in ongoing research in the Region Zealand Mental Health Service within the research themes Psychotherapy & Psychopathology.
University teaching duties relate to pre-graduate teaching in Psychiatry (5th year medical school) as lectures, student activating teaching (tutorials) and thesis supervision. The candidate is also expected to participate in the educational development of the Psychiatry curriculum for Region Zealand Medical School.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be board-certified specialist in psychiatry and must have a documented professional expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with psychosis.

Conditions:
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the clinical professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants or staff specialists at Region Zealand Mental Health Service.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor, at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical/regional work in agreement with the Chief Psychiatrist, Psychiatry East.
