Consultancy in Clinical Microbiology combined with a clinical professorship in Clinical Microbiology with special focus on Molecular Diagnostics and Infection Surveillance
A clinical position as consultant of Clinical Microbiology at the Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Clinical Microbiology wsfo. Molecular Diagnostics and Infection Surveillance at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
With this new position the Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology at Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology in Region Zealand is headed by Chief Consultant Ulrich Stab Jensen and Chief Medical Laboratory Technician Pia Krohn Hansen.
A total of 121 employees work at the department, including ten medical doctors, five clinical academics, two MRSA nurses, eight infection control nurses, seventy-three laboratory technicians, six administrative staff members, and fifteen student assistants (2022).
Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
The Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology in Region Zealand provides microbiological service to hospitals and the primary sector in Region Zealand. The department is organized as part of Zealand University Hospital with laboratories at hospitals in Slagelse and Nykoebing Falster.
The main tasks include:
Analysing sample material from patients for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms.
Providing counselling on prevention and treatment incl. the use of antibiotics.
Reduce the number of resistant bacteria by ensuring targeted antibiotic consumption.
Examining SARS-CoV-2 samples and responsibility for the analyses in Region Zealand. The department is a part of the national pandemic preparedness.
Educating students, new employees and permanent employees.
Taking care of the regional hygiene function, referring to the hygiene committee for the hospitals in the region.
Handling infection prophylaxis and ensuring high infection control through the work of the hygiene nurses.
Providing hygiene advising regarding MRSA in the primary sector in Region Zealand.
Research and development in diagnostics, surveillance and epidemiology of infectious diseases, infection control, and the role of microorganisms in health and disease.
The department has a focus on outgoing functions in terms of advising on treatment, teaching and hospital hygiene.
Clinical functions of the consultant
The consultant shall participate in the daily clinical work in collaboration with MDs and other staff members at the Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology in Region Zealand. This includes taking part in the tasks described above. The consultant shall in particular focus on molecular diagnostics and infection surveillance applying newest laboratory techniques such as whole genome sequencing. Providing data for decisions in infection control is part of the clinical application of local / regional surveillance. Finally, the consultant shall support introduction of new diagnostic tests allowing improved antibiotic treatment and accelerating healing from infectious diseases.
Research and teaching
With the new position as consultant in Clinical Microbiology and clinical professor of Clinical Microbiology wsfo. Molecular Diagnostics and Infection Surveillance the Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.
Qualifications
Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Clinical Microbiology and have documented research experience in molecular diagnostics and infection surveillance. Experience in pre- and post-gradual teaching and PhD supervision is required for the position.
Conditions
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Zealand University Hospital.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region, Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor, at least 50% of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of The Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50% of a full time secretary position from The Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of The Regional Department of Clinical Microbiology, Zealand University Hospital.
