Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) seeks an innovative purpose-driven Research Leader to lead and develop the Clinical Epidemiological Research

Are you an established capacity within clinical epidemiology? We currently have a 5-year leadership position available to join the ambitious and worldwide acknowledged research environment at SDCC - an international, leading, specialized diabetes research hospital. SDCC offers you a unique opportunity to develop our epidemiology research program and lead it to new horizons. You will report to the Head of Department of Clinical and Translational Research and together with the other research leaders of the five other sections in Clinical Translational Research ensure world class research leading to better lives of those with or in risk of developing diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases.

 About Clinical Epidemiological Research

You will be responsible for leading and developing the Section of Clinical Epidemiological Research, whose main task is to develop, conduct and translate epidemiological research into improved prevention and treatment of diabetes, complications to diabetes, and other cardiometabolic diseases contributing to developing precision medicine focusing on cardiometabolic disease. The research group currently has 15-20 employees including senior statisticians, senior researchers, postdocs, PhD and thesis students with primarily medical, public health science and mathematical-statistical educational backgrounds.
At present Clinical Epidemiological Research primarily focuses on understanding why people develop diabetes, and why people with diabetes develop diabetes-related complications. The Department takes pride in using state of the art statistical and epidemiological methods in developing risk-stratification and personalized disease management. Thus, some of the main tasks are collecting, compiling, maintaining, and analyzing data from population studies, clinical trials, Danish and international health registries, the latter of which SDCC has a history spanning generations. The research group has a strong methodological focus with a strategy of developing new statistical and epidemiological research methods to ensure optimal use of the constantly increasing amount and complexity of health data. Importantly, our research is closely embedded in the Department of Diabetes Care and reflects the needs of persons with or at risk of diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases.

Clinical Epidemiological Research is an internationally oriented group working with research groups on virtually all continents of the world with wide international networks and collaborations. In addition, the group provides epidemiological supervision across the organization. 

Work assignments

Through strong professional and strategic leadership, you will maintain and develop epidemiological research at SDCC to reach high international standards and contribute to creating synergy between the research groups in Clinical Research. As an innovative purpose-driven leader of Clinical Epidemiological Research you are expected to define, initiate, and lead joint projects and applications, and actively participate in designing and facilitating research aimed for use in the clinic. Depending on your qualifications and preferences, clinical work may be part of the position.  

  • Through your dedicated and innovative leadership of the research group you will contribute to improving prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic disease including diabetes in Denmark and abroad
  • As an internationally recognized capacity within the area, you will lead the research group with the purpose of ensuring the overall vision of SDCC to conduct world-class research for the benefit of all individuals with diabetes and those at risk
  • You will develop a research program with a focus that not only includes the diabetes epidemiology group, but also ensures alignment with the strategic development of Clinical and Translational Research across SDCC as well as national and international collaborations

 Qualifications

  • You have a relevant academic background, and are well versed within epidemiological and statistical methods
  • You can provide strategic leadership that will ensure clarity, trust, and promote collaboration
  • Your ambition, drive, perseverance and high level of innovation are documented through your overall results and publications and reflects your high academic standards and expectations
  • You have solid experience with scientific collaborations through international networks
  • Knowledge of the Danish national health registers and conducting register-based research is an advantage but not essential.
  • You have knowledge of the Danish health care system enabling your understanding of translational research and implementing results in clinical care
  • Relevant clinical experience in e.g., specialist in endocrinology, cardiology, or nephrology is an asset
