Consultancy in Surgery combined with a clinical professorship in Surgery with special focus on Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Sjællands Universitetshospital, Kirurgisk Afdeling

 

A clinical position as consultant of Surgery at the Department of Surgery at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

 

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Surgery with special focus on Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

 

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

The Region of Zealand has more than 800,000 citizens. Citizens are offered health services from three somatic hospitals: Zealand University Hospital, with three large branches in Roskilde, Nykøbing Falster and Køge, Holbæk Hospital and Næstved-Slagelse-Ringsted Hospital Each of these hospitals has its own hospital administration.

Zealand University Hospital (ZUH) has a total of approx. 1,000 beds. The branch in Roskilde is a specialised hospital and the branch in Køge is an emergency hospital and the future main site for the university hospital. With the future expansion of Køge Hospital starting in 2016, Køge Hospital will be assigned larger areas of specialisation and special functions that will contribute to Køge Hospital becoming Zealand University Hospital´s main hospital. The number of beds in Køge will increase from the current 300 to 900, and extensive capabilities will be developed for ambulatory activities, as well as plans for the most modern technology and large areas dedicated to research, among other initiatives.

Zealand University Hospital is a part of Copenhagen University Hospital, a co-operation between the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and the hospitals of the Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand. ZUH have a complete medical education affiliated with campus at Køge.

About the department

The Department of Surgery at ZUH is undergoing an exciting development. We therefore want to strengthen our clinical and research capabilities by employing a colleague with documented strong competencies in advanced abdominal wall reconstruction, with special focus on robot assisted technique. We would like you to have a strong research profile.

 If you are a specialist in surgical gastroenterology with the ambition to work in a professionally strong department in rapid development both in clinical practice and research, you may be our future colleague.

The Surgical Department currently has a vacancy as consultant for occupation as soon as possible, but coordinated with the clinical professorship associated with the current job advertisement.

 The position is associated with main function in Køge. The Department of Surgery, ZUH, handles diagnostic work-up and treatment within a broad range of gastrointestinal diseases and dysfunctions.

 

The Department of Surgery places emphasis on providing high quality evidence-based diagnostics and treatments. We therefore expect you to be active in ultrasound research and to have documented research experience in your previous career path. In the Department of Surgery, we also believe that a strong professional environment and an active research environment are necessary components to ensure development of both the profession and the individual surgeon, and we expect you to take an active part in this. Thus, education will be a central aspect of your position in both the clinic and in research profile.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The Department of Surgery is located in Køge, where the functions are divided with a focus on good patient processes and a strong professional environment. The Department of Surgery handles treatment as a highly specialized function, regional function and main function under a joint department management.

The Department of Surgery handles the treatment of acute and benign surgical disorders with more than 6,000 operations annually. Most acute patients are admitted via the hospital's Acute Ward and are admitted to the ward's Acute Team. Patients with acute surgical problems are also examined and treated by the hospital's other wards, just as patients with specialized, acute surgical disorders come from the rest of the region.

The section of upper abdominal surgery has regional function and highly specialized function and handles bariatric surgery in the form of gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, reflux surgery and surgery for parastomal hernias as well as surgery of larger, complicated ventral hernias and gigantic hernias.

The section for lower abdominal surgery handles the treatment of benign disorders such as IBD disorders, treatment of complicated Crohn's cases and anal fistulas as well as surgical treatment of anal incontinence for the entire Zealand Region. This section also deals with the treatment of colorectal cancer in the form of examination, treatment and palliation of patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract.

The largest cohort is patients with colorectal cancer and the department performs about 400 colorectal resections annually, of which over 90% are laparoscopic and about 25% robotic assisted. This makes the department one of the largest in this field in Denmark.

Section for lower abdominal surgery in addition serves as regional centre for haematological splenectomies as well as for surgical local treatment of rectal tumours.

The section for endoscopy is also located in Køge. More than 12,000 endoscopies are performed annually in the form of gastroscopies, colonoscopies and a large and growing number of advanced endoscopic procedures as a regional function, for example ERCP, transgastric ERCP, EMR, e-FTR, EUL and CELS. The unit also has a regional function for endoscopic assessment of children with gastroenterological disorders in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics, ZUH.

In Nykøbing Falster, elective surgery in the form of hernia and bile duct surgery as well as haemorrhoid operations are performed.

Research and teaching

The Department of Surgery has a large and very active research unit named “Center for Surgical Science” with more than 40 affiliated researchers and with a strong and growing collaboration nationally and internationally (www.centerforsurgicalscience.dk).

 

With the new position as consultant in Surgery and clinical professor of Surgery with special focus on Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery the Department of Surgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

In addition to the daily tasks involving all different types of examinations and therapeutically procedures, the department focuses on research, education and quality development. The department is responsible for the education of specialists in surgery at many different levels as well as pre-graduate teaching in abdominal surgery for medical students at Copenhagen University. The department is active regarding education with focus on maintaining a good learning environment. This includes teaching of younger doctors in pre-residents positions, interested doctors from other specialties at ZUH Køge and other medical professionals e.g. nurses and the applicant must have interest in taking active part in these activities.

 

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Surgery.

The position is to be filled with a motivated ambitious team player with large national and international network who, together with us, would like to impact the further development of the department by enhancing research in within the field of high volume benign surgical diseases, AWR and surgical education as well as motivate to cross disciplinary collaboration and innovation.

We search for a colleague who puts the patient at the centre, strives for the best possible quality of treatment and who wants to be part of a team of skilled colleagues working together, both nationally and internationally, to develop the Department of Surgery as well as ZUH.

We expect you to be a specialist in surgical gastroenterology with significant experience in benign upper gastrointestinal surgery, advanced abdominal wall reconstruction and robotic assisted surgery. Applicants with documented experience in leadership and research within these areas will be preferred.

The Department of Surgery places emphasis on providing high quality evidence-based diagnostics and treatments. We therefore expect you to be active in research. In the Department of Surgery, we also believe that a strong professional profile and attitude as well as an active research environment is necessary to ensure the development of both the profession and the individual surgeon. We expect you to take an active part in this.

Both ZUH and the Department of Surgery work closely with colleagues and centres in Denmark and abroad, and we expect you to participate in this collaboration and help to strengthen and develop it further.

The department has a strong focus on education, and we expect you to be interested in education and supervision in general. All consultants and other senior doctors have an educational obligation to medical students, introductory doctors, doctors in specialist medical education and other professional groups

The department has the region's professorship in surgery and surgical ultrasound, just as there are both clinical associate professors and senior lecturers.

The specialist function today contains a significant amount of administrative tasks. We try to distribute these evenly and therefore expect you as a consultant to participate in these tasks and have experience in them.

We expect you to show commitment and interest in your own personal and professional development and profiling, and we expect you to actively go into a development of yourself and the department.

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Zealand University Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Surgery. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Surgery, Zealand University Hospital.

The consultant will have main function in Køge/Nykøbing Falster. The department is firmly rooted in the regional development of the hospital system with the management of the specialized surgical functions for Region Zealand.

Salary will be in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
