Consultancy in Surgery combined with a clinical professorship in Emergency Surgery
A clinical position as Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Diseases at Copenhagen University Hospital - Herlev and Gentofte, is open for appointment. This position is combined with a five-year externally funded clinical professorship in Surgery with special focus on Emergency Surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the Department
The Department of Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Diseases at Copenhagen University Hospital - Herlev and Gentofte is a leading national and international center with several highly specialized functions. The Department includes medical and surgical patient units, managed in separate wards and outpatient clinics. A significant portion of the Department's surgery is robot-assisted, and it contains a large endoscopy unit, as well as several research laboratories.
The Department’s main activities are concentrated at the Herlev site, with day surgery conducted at the Gentofte site. The Department serves the Central Planning Area of the Capital Region, which has a population base of approximately 435,000, making it a major emergency intake. Herlev Hospital is prioritized as one of the major emergency hospitals of the Capital Region.
The Department has 105 available beds, and it handles approximately 15,000 annual discharges, 39,000 outpatient contacts, 11,000 endoscopic procedures, and over 4,500 surgeries annually. Its total budget is approximately 240 million DKK, and it employs around 350 staff members.
As a university department, the Department trains students at all levels and contributes to the theoretical and practical parts of specialist training. With national and international collaborations, the Department has significant research activity, particularly in IBD, surgical pathophysiology, hernia surgery, emergency surgery, advanced endoscopy, and colorectal cancer.

Clinical Functions and Focus Areas of the Department
Emergency surgery has significantly developed over the past decade with increasingly complicated and nuanced treatment pathways and possibilities. The department is at the forefront of developing and implementing evidence-based clinical standards, tailoring treatments, and conducting emergency surgery research. With this professorship in emergency surgery, the department wishes to focus on research and implementation in the clinic. The vision is to perform high-impact clinical research and close the gap in clinical practice.
Research and Teaching
With this new position as Consultant Surgeon and Clinical Professor in Surgery with special focus on Emergency Surgery, the Department aims to strengthen clinical research and teaching leadership within this area. As this area of clinical medicine is in rapid development, ongoing implementation of new knowledge into any teaching aspect is of high priority to the department.
Qualifications
Applicants must be board-certified specialists in surgery with significant experience in emergency surgical procedures, knowledge and insight into emergency surgical patient pathways, and a track record of cutting-edge emergency surgical research. Applicants with expertise in implementing emergency surgery standards from all phases of the emergency surgical patient, from disease onset to the transition of care post-discharge, will be prioritized.
Conditions
To be considered for this position, the applicant must apply for both the professorship at the Faculty and the consultancy at the hospital, as outlined in the simultaneously advertised positions. Appointment is conditional upon the applicant being selected for both roles. This also applies to candidates already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital – Herlev and Gentofte.
Salary and employment conditions as a consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and the University of Copenhagen. As a clinical professor, at least 50% of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks, and public communication) in agreement with the Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be dedicated to clinical work, in agreement with the head of the department. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50% of a full-time secretary position from the department. Additional support and details on working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the department at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.
