PhD Biostatistician at Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections (CHIP), Rigshospitalet

We are looking for a full-time PhD biostatistician student with strong epidemiological skills for a position at CHIP - an academic research Centre of Excellence with offices at Rigshospitalet – starting 1 January 2026. Initially, the position is for 1 year with possibility of extension into a 3-year PhD grant depending on approval of a PhD-proposal. We offer a challenging and meaningful position in an exciting and inspiring international research environment.

About us
Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infectious (CHIP) is an international academic research center at Rigshospitalet. We are a dynamic multidisciplinary group working within medical research, public health research, IT and data management, statistics and bioinformatics, clinical trials and research administration. CHIP is a leader in the field of developing and coordinating international clinical trials and international observational cohort studies involving participants with HIV and other infectious diseases such as hepatitis and tuberculosis.

As a research organization, CHIP participates in many international collaborations and you will be working with people from all over the world. As a result, English will be a natural part of your workday.

You can read more here: http://www.chip.dk

The research area

The WHO estimates that 40 million individuals are living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). When taken continuously combination antiretroviral treatment is effective in controlling HIV, restoring immune function and decreasing HIV-related comorbidities and mortality. However, despite successful treatment, accumulating evidence is pointing towards an increased occurrence of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, cancer and chronic liver and renal impairment in HIV-positive persons compared to the general population. The reason for the overrepresentation of these chronic conditions is likely multi-factorial with a combination of HIV-itself, persistent inflammation, coagulation activation, immune dysfunction, ageing, lifestyle factors and adverse drug effects.

CHIP is the coordinating centre for several international multi-cohort collaborations including RESPOND and EuroSIDA, which aims at investigating the effects of HIV, viral hepatitis co-infection, adverse drug effects and comorbidities on morbidity and mortality outcomes amongst people living with HIV.

More specifically, the scientific areas aimed to be included in this PhD-position includes uptake, adverse effects and outcomes of antiretroviral treatment, and comorbidities (e.g. cardiovascular, renal and liver impairment, cancer) in people living with HIV within the RESPOND study. See more here: https://www.chip.dk/research-areas/cohorts/studies-and-projects/respond/

The tasks

The supervisors will be biostatisticians and medical doctors with experience in the scientific and analytical areas affiliated with CHIP. The supervisors will oversee the development of the PhD application and act as advisors during the PhD study.

Using primarily data from our cohort studies you will work together with key researchers to address clinical research questions.  Analytic techniques such as time to event analyses using Poisson regression or Cox proportional hazards models, linear and logistic regression and propensity matching will be commonly used to analyse the longitudinal data.  The datasets are large, including complex real-world data collected over many years, and the analytic skills required are those of someone with a keen interest in epidemiology, as well as using modern statistical techniques to answer clinically relevant questions.

You will primarily be part of the Cohort and Analytics teams at CHIP who work in close collaboration with biostatisticians based in the UK and Australia. You will be responsible for biostatistical analyses and are expected to contribute to the design and analysis of research studies.

In addition, you will be expected to:

  • Support other researchers in analyses of data from large and complex databases
  • Lead and support the writing of papers and present findings based on original research for peer-review journals
  • Work closely together with other researchers and clinicians, as well as international collaborative organizations
  • Support funding initiatives
  • Support data cleaning and QA processes of large datasets
  • Participate in teaching and training activities as part of the position, both at post and pre-graduate level.

Qualification requirements

The candidate is expected to hold a Masters Degree in Medical Statistics, Epidemiology, or equivalent with significant statistical content. Candidates with research experience will be preferred.

In addition, we expect that you have

  • A passion for medical research and an interest in infectious diseases
  • A strong epidemiological background in addition to biostatistical skills
  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of data from large and complex longitudinal data sets
  • Knowledge of the statistical package SAS or willingness to learn SAS and/or significant skills in other statistical software packages (STATA, R)
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts effectively to those with only minimal statistical knowledge
  • Ability to use English as a working language and demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a number of concurrent projects
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and collaborate with clinical researchers, and data managers both locally and internationally
  • Ability to write reports, research results and draft manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications for a non-technical readership according to agreed deadlines

Conditions

Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with current public agreements between the Capital Region of Copenhagen and AC. Your workplace will be CHIP offices at the Rigshospitalet. Funding for the full PhD position is to be ensured by research grants and we expect you to take an active part in the funding application process.  We want to reflect the surrounding society and encourage everyone regardless of personal background to apply.
