Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
The Heart Centre at Rigshospitalet offers clinical and advanced residency programs for cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, anaesthesia, vascular surgery and infectious medicine and research. The large number and complexity of patients at the Heart Centre provides an ideal learning environment for specialized cardiovascular care. In 2024, the Heart Centre physicians completed more than 8000 interventional or diagnostic cardiac catheterisation procedures and performed approximately 1800 open-heart operations. These numbers, and the outcome based on the numerous procedures used to treat different types of heart disease distinguishes the Heart Centre from other institutions in Denmark.
The Heart Centre at Rigshospitalet offers a complex, specialised care programme, which includes: Open heart surgery (coronary bypass procedures and valve surgery), surgery for congenital heart disease, heart (and lung) transplantations, surgery for atrial fibrillation, diagnostic and interventional catheterisation procedures (including a 24-hour service of primary percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction), echocardiography, cardiac CT/magnetic resonance imaging, diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures (ablations), permanent pacemaker insertions (including implantable cardiac defibrillators and biventricular pacemakers), percutaneous lead extractions, percutaneous aortic valve insertions and mitral valve repair, stress tests and ECGs. As a unique feature, the Heart Centre has intensive care facilities designed for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors and patients with severe acute heart failure with treatment options ranging from intensive medical care to implantation of various types of mechanical circulatory assist devices.
Unit for congenital heart disease (CHD):
The team includes, but is not limited to, six staff paediatric cardiologists affiliated with the paediatric department, five staff paediatric anaesthesiologists, three cardiac surgeons, four staff adult cardiologists specialised in adult congenital heart disease of whom one conducts all EP procedures and two all other invasive procedures. We furthermore on average employ four to six specialised nurses. Since 2016, all surgery and catheter interventions on Danish patients with CHD have been centralised at Rigshospitalet, thus serving a population of approx. 6 million. Our three specialized surgeons conduct approximately 200-250 heart operations on children with CHD and approximately 80 adults with CHD. We conduct 300-350 invasive procedures a year (150-175 on both children and adults) on patients with CHD plus 50-80 EP procedures. Our cath team performs a wide spectrum of interventions including transcatheter pulmonary valves and various Hybrid procedures. We have video-conferencing capabilities that are routinely used on a weekly basis for national cardiac conferences letting providers from the other Danish hospitals with CHD clinics dial into our conferences for patient care and education.
