Clinical position as consultant combined with a clinical associate professorship (research) in pathology

The position as consultant is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical associate professor (research) in gastrointestinal pathology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

 

With this new position the Department of Pathology, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

 

As a clinical associate professor (research) at Zealand University Hospital, you become part of a fellowship of professors and other researchers who work to bring research in the forefront for novel treatments to benefit the patients we serve.

 

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the clinical associate professorship (research) and the clinical position.

 

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Pathology, Zealand University Hospital comprises approximately 200 employees including about 35 doctors and several PhD students situated at Køge Hospital, Roskilde Hospital and Næstved Hospital. From August 2026 the pathologist will be housed in new buildings at Køge Hospital, which will be the main regional location.

 

Region Zealand has a population of approximately 820,000 citizens. The Department of Pathology, Zealand University Hospital harbours the regional specialty function for patients from the whole region. The doctors are divided into teams corresponding to subspecialty including hematopathology, breast pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, uropathology, gynaecopathology, dermatopathology, lung pathology and head, neck and throat pathology. The department has a large and fast developing molecular team and is invested in balancing diagnostics, research and development in all our areas.

The Department feeds directly into Patobank and The Danish Cancer Biobank which besides being a tool for diagnostics, data collection and quality assurance programs also provides as a source for research.

The department are digitalizing all histologic diagnostic slides, and we have several projects concerning digitalization and AI.

 

The team of Gastropathology consists of five consultants and one staff specialist and works in daily routine - besides histology and cytology - with modalities within NGS as part of an integrated answer.

 

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in gastrointestinal pathology and clinical associate professor (research) the Department of Pathology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. The applicant should have comprehensive experience with research within the area of both benign and malignant gastrointestinal diseases as well as having a focus towards use of AI and optimization of diagnostic procedures. The applicant needs to have experience with obtaining funding and supervision of younger researchers, including trainees at the department of pathology or PhD-students besides teaching. The Clinical Research Unit of the department consists of a group of senior researchers and PhD students, and it provides an environment supporting research, development and teaching according to the research strategy of the department.

The department participates in teaching medical students at the University of Copenhagen as well as post-graduate doctors within our field.

 

 

Qualifications:

For the position as consultant: Applicants must be an experienced board-certified specialist in Pathology.

 

For the position as staff specialist: Applicants must be a board-certified specialist in Pathology.

 

Conditions:

To be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the faculty (the clinical 0associate professorship (research)) and to the hospital (the clinical position) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the clinical associate professorship (research). Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants or staff specialists at Zealand University Hospital.

 

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant or staff specialist are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

 

As clinical associate professor (research) at most 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining 50 % time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Pathology.
