Consultancy in Internal medicine: Cardiology combined with a clinical professorship in Internal medicine: Cardiology with special focus on decompensated heart failure
A clinical position as consultant of Internal medicine: Cardiology at the Department of Cardiology at Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Internal medicine: Cardiology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department
Bispebjerg-Frederiksberg Hospital (BFH) is part of Copenhagen University Hospital, which is a collaboration between the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and the hospitals in the Capital Region/Region Zealand. BFH is one of Denmark's largest hospitals with a catchment area of approximately 460,000 citizens covering the central part of Copenhagen.
Organization of the department:
- Three wards with a total of 46 beds receiving 9,000 patients annually with symptoms of acute coronary syndromes, acute or worsening heart failure, heart rhythm diseases, venous thromboembolism, valvular heart diseases, endocarditis.
- A non-invasive section performing echocardiography, cardiac MR, CT coronary angiography and cardiac arrhythmia diagnostic tests including implantation of loop recorders.
- Outpatient clinic with 75,000 contacts annually. Included is a specialized clinic for heart failure and cardiomyopathy.
- Regional Knowledge Center for anticoagulation treatment
- Research Unit
The department has approximately 250 full-time positions including 31 consultants.
Research and education
The department has currently two professors, where one is Head of The Research Unit. The department has 8 senior researchers, 17 young researchers (PhD students and medical students doing a research year), a post.doc. in nursing and supporting administrative staff. In 2024 the research unit produced 85 peer-reviewed publications.
The department is educationally active with a focus on maintaining a good educational environment.
Quality
At the department and at the hospital, there is focus on quality work, development and safety for the patient at all management levels. Special focus is on medication and collaboration between sectors to improve safety for the patients.
Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
The department wishes to use the professorship actively to develop pragmatic patient-centered heart failure research, which is a necessity to improve rational use of new diagnostic and treatment options. The ambition is that patient care is based on evidence and creates value for the patient. Examinations and treatments that are not beneficial must be opted out. It is also a specific goal to prevent acute hospitalizations with decompensated heart failure. To ensure an efficient and up-to-date program for these patients, a systematic effort is required both at the initial assessment and the treatment level secured by specialists in cardiology, but with formalized collaboration with other specialties and sectors.
Research and teaching
With the new position as consultant in Internal medicine: Cardiology and clinical professor of Internal medicine: Cardiology with special focus on decompensated heart failure the Department of Cardiology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.
Qualifications
Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Internal medicine: Cardiology.
The applicant must possess unique clinical skills in internal medicine and cardiology, especially regarding heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Experience with cardiac imaging is expected, primarily echocardiography, cardiac MR is an advantage. The applicant must expect to have clinical tasks in the heart failure and cardiomyopathy clinic, diagnostic session, and the cardiology wards.
Conditions
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the Head of Department of Cardiology at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Cardiology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the Head of the Department of Cardiology, Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.
