About the department

The department treats gynecological conditions in women of all ages and handles approximately 5,000 births annually. The department’s focus is on providing high-quality patient care with involvement of both patients and their relatives. The department is physically located at the Herlev site.

The gynecology section includes a gynecological outpatient clinic and inpatient ward, urogynecological clinic, ultrasound scanning, and a reproductive medicine clinic.

The obstetrics/maternity section includes an obstetric clinic with delivery ward, in-house delivery clinic, pregnancy- and loss unit, emergency unit for pregnant women, antenatal outpatient clinic and antenatal-postnatal ward, home birth service, and fetal medicine clinic.

The department has significant research activity within urogynecology, reproductive medicine, obstetrics, fetal medicine, and benign gynecology. Research is conducted by two professors, clinical lecturers, and research nurses and midwives. The department has established a clinical research unit across specialties and professions to strengthen registry-based and clinical research. Additionally, professors and lecturers are responsible for clinical teaching and examination of approximately 100 medical students from the University of Copenhagen each year.

In total, the department has around 425 dedicated staff members, including doctors, nurses, midwives, medical secretaries, social and healthcare assistants, biomedical laboratory scientists, and non-medical academics. We have 85 doctors, including one chief physician, three senior consultants, two professors, consultants, and staff doctors, as well as around 25 training positions at all levels.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

We offer a high volume of outpatient and surgical gynaecological services, primarily focusing on benign conditions, though we also manage selected malignant cases. Furthermore, our fertility clinic handles a substantial patient flow and provides comprehensive reproductive care.

The urogynaecology unit provides both regional-level services (e.g., TVT procedures, bulking agents) and highly specialized care (e.g., urethral diverticula, vesicovaginal fistulas, mesh-related complications, anal incontinence). This includes receiving complex cases referred from other hospitals.

A key focus area of the department is to support women's health across all ages, integrating clinical practice with research in all aspects of women's health—before, during, and after pregnancy and childbirth, as well as later in life. We are currently establishing an HBOC Center (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer) for women in the Eastern Denmark region who are suspected or confirmed carriers of risk genes. These patients often require multidisciplinary management during both diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
