Consultancy in Internal Medicine: Haematology combined with a Clinical Professorship in Internal Medicine: Haematology with special focus on Red Blood Cell Disorders

A clinical position as consultant of Internal Medicine: Haematology at the Department of Haematology, Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Internal Medicine: Haematology with special focus on Red Blood Cell Disorders at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department

The Department of Haematology, under the Centre for Cancer and Organ Diseases at Rigshospitalet, serves the entire Capitol Region as well as Eastern Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. Patients often have multiple internal medicine challenges arising from their hematological conditions, treatments, and comorbidities. The department is organized into four teams - lymphoma, myeloid & benign haematology, multiple myeloma, and allogeneic transplantation - and includes inpatient wards and team-based outpatient clinics. The Department participates in national and international research protocols and has a national function for allogeneic stem cell transplantation. With its own research laboratory and the Danish Red Blood Cell Center, the department offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and teaching in haematology.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The candidate is expected to drive forward the clinical and paraclinical functions at the Danish Red Blood Cell Centre at the Department of Haematology, Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet. This includes overseeing a highly specialized role in the Danish screening program for hemoglobinopathies, ensuring accurate interpretation of test results, and providing specialized outpatient evaluation and treatment for patients with hereditary anaemias. The position also involves advising the Danish Health Authorities on national guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of hemoglobinopathies, close coordination with pediatric specialty departments, and serving as an advisory capacity for healthcare personnel across Denmark. Furthermore, it encompasses professional responsibility for clinical whole-genome sequencing for hereditary anemias via the National Genomics Centre and active engagement in international networks, for example ERN-EuroBloodNet.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in Internal Medicine: Haematology and Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine: Haematology with special focus on Red Blood Cell Disorders the Department of haematology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching in this area.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine: Haematology.

Moreover, the applicant should have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of red blood cell disorders, including hemoglobinopathies, enzymopathies, and membranopathies.
  • Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary laboratory coordination
  • Proven track record in research related red blood cell disorders.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration and mentoring of students
  • Eligibility to practice as a consultant in Denmark or willingness to obtain the necessary licensure.

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) applying simultaneously for the advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Haematology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Haematology, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet.
