Consultancy in Paediatric Anaesthesia combined with a clinical professorship in Paediatric Anaesthesia

 

A clinical position as consultant of paediatric anaesthesia at the Department of  Paediatric and Obstetric Anaesthesia at Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet, is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.                                  

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department

The Department of Paediatric and Obstetric Anaesthesia provides highly specialised anaesthesia care for children undergoing surgical procedures as well as diagnostic and medical interventions. The department performs approximately 4000 paediatric anaesthetics annually, including neonatal anaesthetic procedures. In addition, the department provides anaesthesia services for approximately 5000 deliveries each year.

The department is characterised by a strong interdisciplinary collaboration centred around children and their families, working closely with both surgical and medical specialities. We offer a highly specialised clinical environment with a strong academic profile, excellent collegial relationships, and a shared commitment to provide the highest quality of care, safety, and support for children and their families throughout their treatment course.

The position offers excellent opportunities to contribute to the continued developments of paediatric anaesthesia, clinical research, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration at a high international standard.

Rigshospitalet functions as a highly specialized national referral centre for obstetrics and obstetric anaesthesia, combining preventive care, advanced fetal medicine, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The department is closely involved in the comprehensive perioperative care of these patients.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Clinical work includes providing anaesthesia for children of all ages undergoing a wide range of surgery and procedures. The department provides highly specialised anaesthesia and perioperative care for children of all ages undergoing a broad spectrum of surgical procedures and diagnostic intervention. Clinical activities span routine to highly complex paediatric cases with strong commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and family-centred care.

A key aspect of the role is the close integration with Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ensuring continuity of care for critically ill children and fostering strong interdisciplinary collaboration across surgical, medical and intensive care specialities.

The department is also entering an exciting period of development in preparation for relocation to Mary Elizabeth´s Hospital – Denmark’s new national children’s Hospital – scheduled to open in late 2027. This transition offers a unique opportunity to develop future models of paediatric perioperative and critical care within a modern, international oriented academic children’s hospital.

Research and teaching

With the appointment of a consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Clinical Professor of Paediatric Anaesthesia, the Department of Paediatric and Obstetric Anaesthesia aims to strengthen its leadership in clinical research and teaching.

The applicant should hold a higher research education (i.e., PhD), substantial recent research documented output, substantial organisational experience in line of management and creation of national and international research networks and groups, research units and documented research impact on patient care such as international guidelines and dissemination of evidence-based medicine.

The applicant must hold a higher research qualification (e.g., a PhD), demonstrate substantial and recent documented research output, and possess significant organisational and leadership experience. This should include the establishment and development of national and international research networks and collaborations, the creation or leadership of research groups or units, and documented research impact on patient care, such as contributions to international guidelines and the dissemination of evidence-based medicine.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold EU board certification in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, alongside formal, certified subspecialty training in Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (e.g., the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI) programme).

Conditions

To be considered, applicants must submit applications to both the Faculty (for the professorship) and the hospital (for the consultancy), in accordance with the concurrently advertised professorship.

Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet.

Salary and Employment Conditions

The position is subject to the Collective Agreement for Specialist Doctors and Consultant Physicians (Overlæger) and the applicable Working Time Agreement between the Danish Regions and the relevant medical professional organization.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated to clinical duties in agreement with the Head of Department of Paediatric and Obstetric Anaesthesia. Additional support and detailed terms of employment will be determined in consultation with the Head of the Department at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet.

For non-Danish speakers, there will be assistance to and requirements for acquiring language skills in order to be able to carry out the clinical part.
