Consultancy in surgery combined with a clinical professorship in colorectal cancer

A clinical position as consultant of surgery at the Digestive Disease Center at Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg Frederiksberg Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of surgery with special focus on colorectal cancer at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department

Abdominalcenter K at Bispebjerg Frederiksberg Hospital is one of four emergency hospitals in the Capital Region of Denmark. In Abdominalcenter K, we provide routine emergency and elective surgery, and we have a regional function in the treatment of giant hernias and parastomal hernias as well as complex anal fistulas. In addition, the department also provides specialist treatment of colorectal cancer. Abdominalcenter K also provides medical gastroenterology and hepatology treatment.

Our admission area covers the city centre of Copenhagen with approx. 475,000 citizens and for selected diseases Bornholm with approx. 43,000 citizens. We also provide treatment of rectal cancer for patients from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Abdominalcenter K has an acute surgical admissions unit, a seven-day and a five-day inpatient ward for upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, a day-case surgery ward, operating theatres for both elective and emergency cases as well as an outpatient clinic and a stoma clinic. In the medical gastroenterology section, there is an inpatient ward including a semi-intensive unit, a day hospital with a liver cirrhosis clinic as well as an outpatient clinic and the hospital's general diagnostic unit. The surgical and medical sections share an endoscopy ward with eight rooms and a departmental research unit.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department 

The surgical staff are divided into lower GI surgery, upper GI surgery and endoscopy subspecialties. The upper GI section is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with benign surgical diseases of the abdominal wall and upper GI tract in addition to the evaluation of patients with upper GI cancer, while the lower GI section is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant and benign surgical diseases of the colon and rectum as well as proctological diseases. In addition, the department has a high number of acute admissions and a large flow of acute patients through the department's own surgical admissions unit and acute operating theatre, which offers a broad and professionally challenging range of acute surgical diseases.

The department is organized with departmental leads and delegated areas of responsibility for specialists. We prioritize transparency in management and decision-making processes and emphasize solving problems in an interdisciplinary manner and involving all professional groups. We have a major educational commitment for surgeons in specialist training, early surgical training positions and basic clinical training. In addition, we have our own professorship in surgery in Abdominalcenter K and a high level of research activity with a focus on abdominal wall hernias, colorectal cancer, complex anal fistulas, wound healing, gallstones, acute pancreatitis, liver diseases, and as new areas, research into the intestinal microbiome and palliation.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in surgery and clinical professor of surgery with special focus on colorectal cancer the Digestive Disease Center at Bispebjerg Frederiksberg Hospital wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in surgery.

Conditions 

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg-Frederiksberg Hospital. 

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Digestive Disease Center. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Digestive Disease Center, Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg Frederiksberg Hospital.
