The large number and complexity of patients at the Centre provides an ideal learning environment for specialized pulmonary care. The numbers, and the outcome based on the numerous procedures used to treat different types of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases distinguishes the Centre from other institutions in Denmark.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Division of lung transplantation and pulmonary medicine at Rigshospitalet is highly specialized within respiratory medicine. The department is responsible for the national Danish Lung Transplantation program. Therefore, lung transplantation is the primary focus area, with extensive pre- and post-transplant work up and evaluation. The department is also responsible for specialized treatment of interstitial lung disease, rare pulmonary diseases, advanced treatment of emphysema (surgical and bronchoscopic) and pulmonary hypertension. The department performs a variety of invasive pulmonary procedures.

The department has widespread interdisciplinary collaboration with many other specialties at Rigshospitalet including radiology, pathology, cardiology, immunology, microbiology, intensive care and infectious diseases etc. but also with departments at other Danish hospitals and The Faeroe islands.

Research and teaching are an integrated part of the daily work. As a respiratory consultant at Rigshospitalet, work focuses on the management of patients with rare and complex respiratory diseases and those undergoing lung transplantation. Our specialized unit includes 12 dedicated inpatient beds and is responsible for approximately 3,500 outpatient consultations annually, reflecting the high volume and complexity of cases referred from across Denmark. The current team includes five respiratory medicine specialists.

Each day involves a mix of outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, bronchoscopic procedures and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, where we collaborate closely with thoracic surgeons, radiologists and transplant coordinators to ensure individualized, high-quality care.

In the outpatient setting, we evaluate new referrals from across Denmark, conduct diagnostic assessments and initiate or adjust treatments based on clinical needs. For transplant patients, we are involved in pre-transplant evaluations, monitoring of waitlisted patients, and intensive post-transplant follow-up, managing immunosuppression, infection risk, and potential complications such as rejection or chronic lung allograft dysfunction.
