Consultancy in Internal Medicine: Respiratory Medicine combined with a clinical professorship (chair) in Internal Medicine: Respiratory Medicine
A clinical position as consultant of consultant of Internal Medicine: Respiratory at the Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Disease at Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a 10-year position as clinical professor (chair) of Internal Medicine: Respiratory Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy. Organization
The department has been established in both pulmonary medicine and infectious disease medicine since 2022, when infectious medicine became integrated. The department has an acute intake of 2600 patients per year and the in-patient wards consists of 32 beds divided into two sections. In one of the wards, four beds are designated to patients in need of intermediate care and a day-hospital with eight beds, has been established in the other ward, to which also the function of the hospitals Antibiotic Stewardship is associated. The department has an out-patient clinic with approximately 22.000 visits per year, of which two thirds are in our dedicated specialist out-patient clinic, the rest in our clinic for investigating pulmonary cancer. In all, there are 160 employees, including 22 consultants, of which 16 are consulting pulmonologists and 6 are specialists in infectious medicine.
As most of our in-patients are acutely hospitalized, the department is a significant collaboration partner with The Department of Emergency Medicine at the hospital, and a partnership agreement has been signed with Bornholm Hospital.
The department has a large and well-established research unit in pulmonary medicine with close national and international collaborations. The head of the unit has a professorship in severe asthma, leading
a large research team consisting of doctors, laboratory scientists, nurses, laboratory technicians and administrative staff. Research is being conducted in areas such as asthma, allergies, COPD, cough and dysfunctional breathing.
Research is also conducted within areas of infectious medicine, and development is underway, with the aim of expanding and strengthening research.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
The patient base for the department is approximately 500,000 citizens, and for the evaluation of patients suspected of lung cancer, 900,000.
The department is a significant part of the medical bed capacity and receives patients with, among other diseases, pneumothorax, infections, asthma, COPD, and patients with comorbidities are frequent. Doctors participate in on-call coverage at all levels in the department, seven days a week.
In the out-patient clinic a wide range of patients with diseases including infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung diseases, allergies, patients with lung infiltrates, patients with need for pulmonary rehabilitation and many other aspects of pulmonary and infectious medicine. The department has a leading position both nationally and internationally regarding the diagnosis and treatment of difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat asthma, as in elite athletes. Further, the department covers a wide range of invasive pulmonary procedures in patients suspected of lung cancer including bronchoscopy, transthoracic needle aspiration lung biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) and esophageal ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). The placement of pleural drains and permanent drains are routinely performed.
Collaboration due to the merger of the Capital Region and Region Zealand with the resulting consequences for collaboration and patientcare is a central effort over the next years, as is the expansion of cooperation with municipalities and general practitioners and general practice.
Research and teaching
With this new position the Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
Qualifications
Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine: Respiratory Medicine.
Conditions
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg.
